Australia, 25 May, Federation of Nepalese Community Associations of Australia (FeNCAA) is all set to mark the International Everest Day Celebration on 29 May 2022 in all capital cities of Australia with the simple slogan “Let’s Preserve Mt. Everest” FeNCAA and its member organizations in association with other community organisations are celebrating the occasion in all eight state/territory capital cities of Australia. International Everest Day is celebrated on May 29 every year in the memory of the first successful attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest by human beings.
New Zealand’s Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay Sherpa successfully climbed Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Following the passing of Sir Edmund Hillary in 2008, Nepal made an official decision to observe the day as International Everest Day which is celebrated in Nepal and many other countries, largely by mountaineers and Nepalese diaspora. FeNCAA, which is a national coordinating body of Nepalese community organisations representing people of Nepalese origin residing in Australia, has taken initiative to celebrate the International Everest Day every year from now onwards in all capital and non-capital cities of Australia.
The theme of this year’s celebration is to promote the preservation of the socio-climatic atmosphere of Mt Everest for our current and future generations to come with a simple slogan “Let’s Preserve Mount Everest”. This year’s event will be attended by the members of the Nepalese community, the Embassy of Nepal in Australia, the offices of Nepalese Consulate Generals, political leaders of Australia and Nepal, Nepalese journalists, Australia based embassies and their consulate offices, Australia Himalaya Foundation, Fred Hollow Foundation, Everest summiteers from Australia and Nepal and many non-Nepalese community organizations.
The International Everest Day will be celebrated with a group walk in the morning followed by experience sharing by Everest summiteers, speeches by invited distinguished guests, and barbeque. FeNCAA is also hosting a webinar on the social and environmental impact of Mt. Everest at 6:00 pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) on 29 May 2022. Environmental experts, scientists, and a minister representing the government of Nepal will be giving an address at the webinar.
