Sydney, ‘Westmead Tigers Cup 2022’ 9 A side (35+) Veterans’ Nepalese Football Tournament, is scheduled to be held on 9th July in Sydney Smith Park, 49 Amos Street Westmead NSW. 10 Sydney-based teams will be chasing the covetous championship. The one-day ‘football-fiesta’ of distinction is presented by Westmead Tigers Football Club and supported by the Nepalese community in Sydney, Westmead. The League cum Knock-out combination tournament is held annually targeting veteran footballers. The cup has Aussie Finance and Home Loans, Queensford College, AM Advisory, Sydney City College of Management, Prisms Education and Visa Services, In Touch Accountancy and Taxation Services Pty Ltd, Everest Mortgage Solutions, Wish Real Estate, Red and Blue Home Loan Pty Ltd, Sunrise Mart, BOTA Corner, Delighted Tours and Travels, and Global Consult as the sponsors.
On the eve of the much-awaited Veterans’ Nepalese Football Tournament, a team draw was held on 2nd July amid a lively and encouraging atmosphere in Sydney Smith Park, Westmead. In the event hosted by the club secretary Kamal Adhikari, a comprehensive briefing was made on the rules and regulations of the significant sporting contest first of its kind in our community. The group stage pairings or matchups, and the advancement from the group stage to the knockout round were announced.
The team draw was made with 3 teams in groups A and C and 4 in group B. As per the universal practice, the three seeded teams were the host team (Westmead Tigers Football Club), NRC (Defending champion), and McArthur Nepalese Football Club (Defending runner-up). In groups, A and C three teams will be competing and in group B there are four teams including the host team. Group C includes three teams –Nepalese Recreational Club (NRC), Khukuri FC, and Doonside Dynamites. In group A there are three teams McArthur Nepalese Football Club, NRNA, Australia, and Penrith Gorillas In Group B there are four teams -Westmead Tigers Football Club, Central Coast Tigers FC, – Australian Education Consultant Alliance (AECA), and Hamro Club, Oran Park. The winners from groups A and C and the winner and runner-up from group B will progress to the last 4.
Also present on the occasion was the representative of AECA Dinesh KC who enthusiastically participated in the process of finalizing the fixture.
In his welcome speech, the Westmead FC Vice President and club player Deepak Chhetry stated, “I personally and on behalf of the team would like to welcome, greet and thank all representatives of the participating teams, media, sponsors, and valued community members for your kind presence and support. We are committed to delivering to the best of our resources and experience to write the script for this year’s grand success. We are proud to continue the glorious tradition and contribute to the rich sports culture of our community. We also would like to hold in high regard the community members’ admirable cooperation and support. We will remain thankful to all the valued stakeholders who have supported us very reassuringly for the last round of preparation to make the running cup a grand success like in its previous editions. We look forward to your ongoing cooperation.”
From the chair, the Club President Ujjwal Pandey viewed, “The club would remain thankful to all the valued stakeholders, including all the participating teams. Our bottom-line objective is to give a respectable facelift to our football culture and make sportsmanship win all the way through fair contests and healthy recreation. The Veterans’ Nepalese Football Tournament winner will be awarded the trophy, cash prize of $1,000, Khashi, and medals, and the runner-up trophy, trophy, cash prize of $ 500, and medals. Played in a round-robin format, matches of the league stage, and the semi-finals will be played for 20 minutes, whereas the title match will be played for 30 minutes. I would like to appeal to all the teams to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation for decent competition. We thankfully recognize all stakeholders who have supported us since our inaugural tournament for the overall success and goodwill of this tournament and hope that you would continue to cooperate with us to make this tournament too a resounding success.”
The NRNA, Australia President, and well-known veteran footballer Nanda Gurung shared with www.nepaleseaustralian.com.au, “We are proud to be a part of this glorious Veterans’ Nepalese Football Tournament this year too. We are simply excited to participate in this tournament that connects NRNA, Australia directly to the community sporting organization. Since the tournament’s inaugural edition, NRNA, Australia has been enthusiastically participating in this tournament. This is the only football tournament in which NRNA, Australia competes every year. The organizer has offered a fitting platform to the veteran footballers aiming to enhance the quality of our common sports culture. NRNA, Australia, our community, and soccer stakeholders are truly appreciative of the rewarding efforts put in consistently by the organizers since 2021, The organizers have performed improving the reliability and emulated the standard of the previous editions. It would as in the past be of great benefit to everyone concerned and for what it meant. The captain of the inaugural edition of this championship, NRNA Australia, VP, and NSW Coordinator Dev Gurung said, “NRNA, Australia is competing to win the trophy this year too by maintaining sportsmanship and community harmony. This tournament has already been established as an exclusive event in its own right. It has adopted the pioneering modality in that only one ANFA, Australia registered player above 35 can participate. In the first edition NRNA, Australia, NSW lifted this championship. It brought the first major football tournament for NRNA, Australia. We would be very happy to continue with its legacy. We are expecting a trophy-winning performance this year too. It is a great platform for veteran footballers in particular those who are not participating in the major tournaments organized by ANFA, GNC, and NAWS or not playing for mainstream community clubs. I/We NRNA NSW team would like to wish the organizers every success and looking forward to joining in the reputed sporting event.”
Our community’s renowned veteran senior sports personality, the former NRNA, Oceania, Regional Coordinator, Bishnu Hamal who was present representing NRC remarked, “I’d like to request all teams to practice sportsmanship while displaying their splendid games. Hats off to the WTC for accommodating those veteran players who do not play in other highly competitive 35+ tournaments such as GNC, NAWS, etc. but are still passionate to fulfill their sense of competitiveness. WTC club deserves huge thanks for creating a platform to offer the opportunity to the enthusiastic veteran footballers to create a social network and friendly bonding. We all have a moral obligation to support the club which has been pulling great efforts together to promote our soccer culture and social bonding. It feels great to see the organizer going from strength to strength in its performance and achieving its noble goals by creating social harmony through one best sports in our community and Nepal’s most popular group game. Let’s celebrate the proud campaign together to foster our football culture.”
AECA President the forerunning sports campaigner in our community Bhupal Sitoula shared, “We are very happy to see the vibrant and active football fraternity in NSW. Special thanks are due to the great organizers who have obliged the veteran players. We are lucky that we can participate in the tournament even after we hit our birthdays in the mid-30s and mid-40s and so on. We would like to thank Westmead Tiger Football Club for creating the appropriate and meaningful opportunity for the veterans to enjoy socialization through the purposeful contest. I would like to thank the organizers and wish it to be a great success. We would try our best to continue to justify our corporate social commitment and support healthy sporting contests. Like in the past, it would see footballing spectacles and worthwhile events.
The respected ANFA President Bijen Batajoo remarked, “It’s a remarkable achievement for the overall progress of our football culture. This Veterans’ Nepalese Football Tournament has deservedly earned a reputation mainly among veteran footballers. Is always eager to collaborate with all football organizers. We are continuously working on supporting clubs, organizers and how we can do better as we progress. his kind of tournament brings the community together and fosters bonding between veteran players some of whom are in their late 50s. We are celebrating the golden saying – Aging people have special potential and while they play, they inspire the younger generations. These kinds of events are helping uplift directly or indirectly Nepalese soccer culture as all the established and settled community members are engaged in a purposeful way”.
The communique issued by the club said that it is proud to announce the 3rd edition of the Westmead Tigers Cup Veterans’ Nepalese Football Tournament. The organizing of the tournament is a unique event aimed at football players of Nepali background who are over 35 years of age and play only on a leisurely basis. The goal of the event is to promote camaraderie amongst similar-minded people and for them to play in a competition and have fun along the way. This year, 10 teams have confirmed participation, including a team from Central Coast. This shows the growing popularity of the event and the enthusiasm from hidden talents within the community. Being a 1-day event, the day will see a large turnout of the Nepali community enjoying the unmissable show put on by the young-at-heart players with silken skills.
